The Waking
The story of Emberwild: ten chapters and an epilogue, from a warm wind in Brookhollow to the Ember Heart under the Cinder Keep, and home again.
Something under the world is waking up. The story is a chain of ten quests and an epilogue. Each chapter unlocks the next, and your journal (J) shows them at the top of the Quests tab. You see the chapter you are on, who to talk to, and "The story so far" for every chapter you have finished.
See the story page for every chapter's objectives and rewards.
Who to talk to
- Elder Maren in Brookhollow starts it all (level 3). She also gives chapter 2.
- Odo, Keeper of the Shrine in Millbrook gives chapters 3 and 4.
- Sister Ashra in the Cinder Keep gives chapters 5 to 10.
- Elder Maren gives the epilogue, chapter 11, when you come home.
How it goes
- A Warm Wind (level 3): talk to Bram, then look in the hollow cave.
- The Bonelord's Ember (level 12): beat the Bonelord and take its ember shard.
- The Shrine Keeper (level 12): Odo wants ruin archers and bone mages cleared.
- What the Deep Keeps (level 18): the Deep One holds the second shard.
- The Keeper of the Ember Gate (level 24): Ashra asks for six ash wraiths, then tells you about the gate.
- The King Beneath the Stones, 7. Twenty Winters and 8. The Tide's Master (levels 28–32) can be done in any order: the Barrow King, Rimeclaw and the Tide Serpent each carry a shard.
- The Ember Gate (level 32): bring Ashra all five shards. She unseals the gate at the north end of the Cinder Keep.
- The Emberwraith (level 34): go through the gate into the Ember Heart and beat the Emberwraith.
Ember shards
Each of the five bosses (the Bonelord, the Deep One, the Barrow King, Rimeclaw and the Tide Serpent) has a 1-in-5 chance to drop its shard, so bring potions for a few kills. You can collect them early, before you reach their chapter. Shards stack and can't be sold.
The Ember Heart
The gate stays sealed until you finish chapter 9. Inside is a lava cavern with cinder shades and the Emberwraith, a level 36 boss with 6,500 hit points. It casts from three tiles away, slams everything around it, burns, gets angrier as it weakens, and its magic goes through some of your armour. See Bosses.
The way back is right where you arrive. If you fall, you wake up in the Cinder Keep.
The epilogue: Afterglow
Once the Emberwraith is gone, go home to Elder Maren (level 34). Tell Odo how it ended, see Sister Ashra at the Keep, put out eight of the last cinder shades in the Ember Heart, then sit by Maren's fire. The reward is her Hearthfire Ring, two mastery points and the Hearthkeeper achievement and title.
The ending
Finishing chapter 10 gives you the Heart of Embers amulet, a big reward of GP and XP, three mastery points and the achievement Emberbound with its title. Then the epilogue waits at home.
Stilling the Ember Heart also cools the black gate on the Cinder Keep's east side. Behind it is the Ashen Citadel, where the Emberwraith's regent still holds court.
